Your Feet & Work

If you find yourself on your feet for a large portion of the day you are in the company of thousands of other Americans. Due to the physical expectations of our jobs (or our families) and the required hours on our feet discomfort, fatigue, and swelling in the legs are becoming more and more common. Spending too much time on your feet increases your risk of pain affecting your feet, shins, calves, knees, thighs, hips, and lower back.

What can I do to take care of my feet at work?

  • Wear supportive shoes that offer your feet comfort. Times have changed and you are now able to find footwear that are both stylish and supportive. Do not settle for looks or comfort only! Stay away from really high heels or shoes with very pointy toes. These are no-no because they can reduce circulation and encourage cramping all throughout the foot.
  • If you are confined to specific space and it has hard flooring your are setting yourself up for discomfort. If at all possible cover the flooring with a rubber mat or rug that will cushion the area you must stand in. This will reduce the impact on both your legs and feet.
  • Compression socks can bring great relief to those dealing with foot or leg pain. The compression increases the pressure in your leg tissue thereby reducing and preventing swelling.
  • Changing a few daily habits can dramatically improve your sense of comfort at the end of the day. Try to alternate between standing and sitting as much as possible. Being able to change positions frequently will allow you to move your weight around by stretching and standing in different positions. Also, try working hamstring and calf stretches into your daily routine. This will help you to feel immediate relief from pain and discomfort.
