Flip-Flop Foot Care Advice

Date: 8/15/2016

For many of us summertime means time for wearing flip-flops, showing of our pedicured feet, and enjoying the sunshine! Unfortunately, this choice of seasonal footwear could end up causing more pain than pleasure. The problem is that not all flip-flops are created equally, nor are they made for all summer activities. Keep the following in mind while choosing your summer sandals!

  1. Size matters: Make sure that you purchase a properly fitting flop. Wearing one that is too big or too small will not only cause you muscular discomfort but it will leave you open to other issues like blisters or injuring your feet on the surface that you are are walking on.
  2. Arch support: We have all seen the super flat inexpensive flip-flops that are available in every color under the sun. Do not be fooled into thinking that this is a smart purchase. Find a flop that is thicker in the middle and therefore provides arch support.
  3. Worn out flops: If you are wearing flip-flops from last season check to make sure that they are still foot-worthy. Has the heel worn thin? Is the thong between the toes still at full strength? It may be time to go shopping, as both of these issues can create undue stress on your feet.
  4. Toe torment: Your feet may not transition back into your summer wear without irritation. Sometimes the thong that separates your toes will take some getting used to. If you are experiencing redness, blistering, or irritation find a sandal that does not have toe separators.
  5. Quality purchase: A quality flip-flop will not only offer you support through your arch but it will also do so in its firmness. While shopping, try bending the sandal gently to test its flexibility. If it has a little give in the ball of the foot it will do its job properly, and if it folds in half it will offer you no support.
  6. A different path: Flip-flops may not be the right fit for you. If you have a history with foot pain or past injuries you may want to pick a sturdier choice of footwear. This is especially true if you are living with diabetes as you may acquire an injury without even being aware of it. Additionally, a closed-toe structured shoe is recommended if you are overweight as this will be the most supportive option.
