Are You Wearing the Right Shoes?

Date: 10/15/2016

Taking the time to find the correct shoe for your foot can save you from a multitude of podiatric issues such as bunions, calluses, and corns. The proper footwear can not only relieve pain that is caused by a deformity or joint problem it can also prevent a foot or toe problem from getting worse, as well as stop one from returning.
When shopping for footwear:

  • Go at the end of the day, this is when your feet will be most swollen due to your daily routine.
  • Always have both feet measured when you shop. Size and width can continue to change with age. Make your choice of footwear based on how the larger foot feels in the shoe.
  • Stand flat-footed on both feet during the fitting process.
  • If you use orthotics or shoe inserts, make sure to bring them with when are shopping so that you can truly judge how your potential new shoes will truly fit.
  • Walk in the shoe for a few minutes while in the store. Do not worry about the shoe size, instead focus on how it feels as your are walking. You should not have to “break in” a shoe. If it fits well it should be comfortable from the start.
  • If you are feeling like you are between shoe sizes, as the clerk if they are able to stretch the shoe for a more comfortable fit.
  • Look for low heels to avoid undue pressure on the front of the foot and on your toe joints. Aim for a shoe that has a cushioned yet firm heel to keep your foot in the right angle to keep from slipping.
  • As you walk the sole of the shoe should be bending naturally with your fit, not so stiff so that there is no flexibility.
  • Make sure your toes have enough space to wiggle within your shoe.
  • If possible try for a lace-up shoe instead of a slip-on.
